Calculating Route

But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth;
for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears,
He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.
John 16:13, NASB

I'm so thankful God gave us the Holy Spirit to guide us. I'm really not good at following directions. I get busy. I talk, I gesture, I sing, I think...and I stop listening to my GPS on my phone.

There is a critical built in function for which I am thankful; when I hear that voice say, "Calculating route." That is when I know I've made a misstep in my navigation. If I had only printed out my directions like in "the old days" I wouldn't be able to get the route calculated as quickly. But, thanks to modern technology, the little computers in our phones or GPS can now recalculate our routes to get us back on track when we have strayed off course.

I've found that I need the "recalculation" function the most if I'm in an area with lots of traffic and lots of on-ramps and off-ramps. Many years ago I was driving in Chicago two days a week. There were so many ramps that I would hear my GPS tell me to exit, but it would be too late!

I dreaded that sound, "Calculating route..." because then I'd know I'd missed my exit.

However, it was that sound that also made me feel secure...I was being looked out for...I had someone who KNEW where I should go and who WANTED me to get there.

Isn't that how we feel when the Holy Spirit nudges us?

"Tammie, we need to recalculate your attitude...you've left the path, and you've taken your eyes off God."

"Tammie, we need to recalculate your heart...you're not reading God's Word, and you're becoming defensive and judgmental because of it."

"Tammie, we need to recalculate your time...you're spending too much time watching TV."

Ugh...I KNOW what I should do...but sometimes life is moving too fast and there are too many options and I pick the wrong one because I'm not focused on GOD.

How does the Holy Spirit let us know when we've left the path?

For me it's a gut feeling, or a random thought that pops into my head, or a song that comes on the radio. It can be a personalized license plate, a bumper sticker, or something our littlest kid says that makes our jaw drop and we think, "Well, that WEIRD...where did THAT come from?" The Holy Spirit communicates with us all the time when we are saved and have the Holy Spirit living in us.

I have to keep my phone charging when I'm using my GPS; it takes a lot of energy and the screen is on all the time. We need to charge the Holy Spirit by reading the Bible and having a healthy prayer life. We may be parents of children with special needs, but we can't let that distract us from the most important thing; our relationship with God. If we don't plug in and charge our Holy Spirit with scripture and prayer, it won't be able to communicate with us for long.

Pray:  Heavenly Father, thank you sending the Holy Spirit to guide us through this life. I know I often forget to charge this GPS of mine, and I will commit to spending more time with you so I can listen to the Holy Spirit to keep me on the right path. Amen.
