The Giant in You!

‘The people of the land are taller and more powerful than we are, and their towns are large, with walls rising high into the sky! We even saw giants there…’
“But I said to you, ‘Don’t be shocked or afraid of them! The lord your God is going ahead of you. He will fight for you, just as you saw him do in Egypt. And you saw how the lord your God cared for you all along the way as you traveled through the wilderness, just as a father cares for his child. Now he has brought you to this place.’
(Deuteronomy 1:28-31, NLT)

The Real Life Tsunamis

It's only January 9, and you're tired already. It's only Monday morning, and your brain is buzzing with problems to solve. This early in the week and you've changed too many diapers, cleaned strange body fluids, become chummy with hospital staff, abandoned dinner preparations to help a child feel calmer, not bathed as often as you would have liked, separated siblings to keep them safe, abandoned your resolution to eat healthy even when stressed and answered one too many questions about a challenge your child is demonstrating in a public space.

There was no manual for this. You wish it was like in the movie The Santa Clause where the Santa suit came with an entire army of elves and resources to make sure you got the job done. Instead, You are writing your own manual, and the topics in the manual keep morphing and multiplying. You are building your own resources, piece by piece while trying to stop hurricanes and termites from destroying your stash. The only constant in your life is change and for once, you would just like to know for sure how to move forward.

I understand.

But it's a setup. This barrage of challenge and stress in the rear view mirror ... or even immediately in front of you... is like the fog that descends on a rainy fall day.  All the stuff you thought you knew vanishes and the stuff you think is ahead becomes uncertain. So this morning, I want to remind you of what's behind the fog.

The Word God Has spoken to you.

You remember the moment? You were at home or driving or at church, or maybe hiking in the woods. You were puzzling over this beautiful, mysterious creature, your son, your daughter, that has been sent your way. You were so confused, wondering what the future would hold. Then a miracle occurred. The Gracious God spoke to you.

  • He said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” (2 Cor. 12:9, NLT).
  • He also told you that "I know the plans I have for your child. They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give him/her a future and a hope" (Jer. 29:11, NLT).
  • When you talked about the known challenges of raising a child with special needs, He said, "You can certainly do it" (Numbers 11:30) because "I am your God, I'm with you and I'm in you" (Is. 41:10 & John 14:20)
  • When you wailed,This land is overrun with giants and I'm no more than a grasshopper in comparison! He reminded you, I've given you power, love and mental soundness. I've healed your eyes. See through the eyes of faith. Through those eyes, you are not a grasshopper.

So Stand

This Monday morning, you are a giant, bigger than any giant that faces you.  You are hidden in the God of the universe, and mysteriously, He lives in you. In the face of the Richter scale 10 sensory meltdown, you have the peace of the Eternal in you, anchoring you, AND supernaturally, anchoring you child. Although you haven't had 5 consecutive hours of sleep in weeks, the Holy One supernaturally replenishes you from the inside, and you will run towards whatever faces you today, in the Strength of the Living God. You won't be consumed. He will hold you. He will fight for you.

Don't let all that stuff over this past few days/weeks fool you. It's a setup, you won't recognize what God will do. Stand and see the salvation of the Lord (Ex. 14:13).

Dear Lord, Please help me see with your eyes, hear your words and stand with your strength, as we anticipate seeing all you will do today.
Amen!
