"Are You Serious?" Awards - Volume XXXVII: The Medical Authorities Have Spoken Edition

Only a few weeks back we had a school district in Fresno, California who was our regrettable "winner" for having their make-shift "cage" for non-compliant students, discovered by a parent.  This week's winner seems to be a cousin to that school, but is located in the Charlotte, North Carolina area.

Mother, Jennifer Harris, recently discovered that her son was locked in a room after an emotional outburst at school.  Her son reported that he was never checked on during the time he was secluded in this room.

In cooperation with the school, this mother had her son evaluated by Johns Hopkins Children's Mental Health Center in Baltimore.  The report they returned to this parent was shocking.  The evaluation determined that the school was to blame for her son's outbursts.

 Are you SERIOUS?!

Accommodations and therapies required by law were allegedly not being provided to Harris' son, and class sizes were far too overwhelming.  It would appear that a one-size-fits-all model of inclusion has been the mode of operation for this particular district.  Considering how uniquely each child is made, it is no wonder that this proves ineffective for many kids.

Jennifer Harris has pulled her son from this school environment.  She states that she is even ready to take this matter to court if it is not resolved.

Sadly, too many parents find themselves in this sort of adversarial position with school districts.  And districts have not found adequate ways to protect safety of staff while still protecting the dignity of kids with special needs.

Thank God for a medical facility like Johns Hopkins, familiar with best practices and unashamed to speak up for what should be in place, by law, for children with special educational requirements!
