We Interrupt Our Usual Post to Invite You to This Terrific Opportunity

Every once in awhile, an utterly UNIQUE opportunity arises for parents raising kids with special needs to connect.  SMALL TALK:  Learning From My Children About What Matters Most by Amy Julia Becker is one such occasion.

While this treasure of a book has a wider audience including every parent, I find it to be a comfortable fit for those of us raising children with chronic illness or special needs.  Becker is the mother of 3 beautiful children, the eldest of which has Down Syndrome.  In the book, she weaves precious stories of her children that happen to include some of the nuances involved with special needs.

However, there are 2 more significant reasons why this book makes it a perfect pick for the special needs crowd.  The first reason is that Amy's reflective prose is extremely readable, and is written in short, manageable chapters for parents like us.  Face it, we parents raising beyond-average kids are even shorter on time than the typical mother or father.  Yet, we still enjoy a good read when we can get to it.  The second reason, which tends to be more convicting, is that we tend to spend more time with our nose to the grindstone, just trying to get through each day, and less time reflecting on the impact of raising our children than the average parent.  I found myself with tears welling up in my eyes, wanting to go grab old photo albums after reading the first few chapters.  The author made me suddenly realize that my children's lives are marching along way too fast, and the cherished moments, the important lessons can literally slip through my fingers if I am not careful.

All of this being said, I would like to invite YOU to join ME for a small group discussion of SMALL TALK from November 10 - 30, 2014 on Facebook.  This will be a secret group, kept confidential for open discussion, and the opportunity to build community with other parents walking the same journey.  Each day, a new discussion question will be posted for the book.  You can hop on at any point in the day to reflect and add your 2 cents worth.  To register, simply go to this link:

Once you have completed the registration information, we will e-mail you the link to join the secret group on Facebook.

Meanwhile, you can get your copy of the book, published by Zondervan at Amazon, Barnes & Noble,, Zondervan, or Hickory Stick Bookshop.

Can't wait to get started!
